Greater Baton Rouge Home Sales Drop 14% in 2007
For the second consecutive year, the number of houses sold in the Capital Region dropped because of continuing comparisons with the post-Katrina housing boom. There were 9,489 homes sold in metro Baton Rouge during 2007, according figures from to the Greater Baton Rouge Association of Realtors Multiple Listing Service as of Monday afternoon. That’s 14% less than the 11,063 houses sold in 2006. Despite the sales slowdown, there were some bright spots. The average sale price for a home was up 5.5%, from $186,035 in 2006 to $196,298 in 2007. The biggest sales drop happened in Ascension Parish, were the number of houses sold dropped by 22.7% in 2007, from 2,104 to 1,626. Home prices in Ascension were up by 5.2%, to $223,680. East Baton Rouge reported a 12.7% decrease in annual sales, from 6,501 to 5,674. Livingston Parish sales were down 11.4%, from 1,718 in 2006 to 1,523 in 2007. Sales in the other category, which includes West Baton Rouge, East and West Feliciana, Iberville and Pointe Coupee parishes, were down 10%, from 740 in 2006 to 666 in 2007.
